Leland’s varsity baseball team picked right up from where they left off after winning the DeJesus Memorial Tourna-ment, by jumping all over Santa Teresa in the league opener for 8 runs in the second inning on the Saint’s field, Feb. 28.
However, the apparent runaway win was not to be as Santa Teresa battled back with some timely hitting but mostly aided by a lot of base on balls from Leland’s pitching staff and multiple errors in the same inning by the Charger defense. Senior Drew Marino and junior Will Boring led the offense with a couple of hits apiece.
The Chargers saw their lead whittled away by each passing inning until they tied the score 9-9 at the end of six innings. Finally, darkness won out and the game was called and will continued April 21 when the Saints come to Leland for the rubber match of the series. The game will resume from the point it was called to decide the winner and the final game of the series will be played immediately after.
On Friday Feb. 29, the Chargers took care of business in regulation by beating the Saints 4-2 behind the combined pitching efforts of sophomore Sean Buchanan and senior Cam O’Halleran. Buchanan started the game and left with the score tied at two apiece. O’Halleran finished up for win.
The Leland squad played for third straight day on Saturday March 1 with a non-league game by beating Evergreen Valley High School 8-1 on the Cougar’s field. Drew Marino got things off to an impressive start by hitting a home run to right field in his first at bat. Marino also held Evergreen’s batters in check with a strong outing on the mound. Senior Spencer Lanoue also went deep for his first homerun of the year to right field. Junior pitcher Wes Deimling came in in relief of Marino and secured the victory.
This week the Chargers resume league play with a home and home against Branham High School. Game times are at 3:30 at Branham on Wednesday and Friday at Leland.
