Chargers gain split with Mustangs

With undefeated Live Oak looming next week, the Chargers found themselves in a game they almost had to win on Friday. After going down 1-2-3 in the first inning, it looked as if it might be Pioneer's day again, as they plated a run to take a 1-0 lead. Charger starter sophomore Sean Buchanan did a nice job of keeping them to only one run, as the bases were full of Mustangs.

In their half of the second the Charger bats going going a little, Trevor Dyer led off with a single, but was thrown out trying to steal. Spencer Lanoue walked and Cameron O'Halloran lined a single to left. Taylor Ronsvalle grounded out on a fielders choice but moved both runners up 90 feet with Will Boring coming to the plate. After falling behind in the count, Boring singled over second to plate both LaNoue and O'Halloran to give the Chargers a lead they would never surrender.

After a scoreless second Chargers leadoff hitter Kevin Krail reached on an error and promptly stole second. After getting a fly out by Drew Marino and a strikeout of Nate Jones, it looked as if the Mustang's Rudolf might escape the inning, but Trevor Dyer came through with a 2-out line shot into left field to score Krail and the Chargers had a 3-1 lead.

They made it 4-1 after a lead off Double by Krail in the 5th and a steal of 3rd, he would eventually score on a sac fly by Drew Marino. In the bottom of the 5th however, Pioneer loaded the bases with one out and one of their top hitters at the plate. With Cameron O'Halloran now in relief of Buchanan, he induced a well turned 5-4-3 double play to get out of the game. "That was the play of the game" said Charger head coach Tim Thompson. "So often you see that ball hit and the 3B hesitate or make the wrong decision, Drew knew exactly where he was going with that ball, and Trevor (Marino) was there and made a great turn".
Leland would tack on two more runs in their half of the 7th as both Kevin Krail and Nate Jones scored on wild pitches.
Kevin Krail led the Chargers with two doubles, two stolen bases and three runs scored.
The Chargers now 7-3-1 overall have a non-leage game tommorow at home vs Sobrato high school before resuming league play next week vs Live Oak.
